The 2023 Terahertz Science and Technology Roadmap in J. Phys. D: Appl. Phys. with contributions from TRR227 investigators T. Kampfrath and T. Seifert.

The Journal of Physics D: Applied Physics just published “The 2023 Terahertz Science and Technology Roadmap”. It contains two contributions from the Collaborative Research Center TRR 227 “Ultrafast spin dynamics” and the Terahertz Physics Group fo the FU Physics Department: a perspective article on “Terahertz spintronics and magnetism” and another one on “Terahertz emission spectroscopy and imaging”.

As a collective effort of leading experts from many different countries, the “The 2023 Terahertz Science and Technology Roadmap”, which is an Open Access article, is intended to provide a reference point and guide to the interested community on relevant and emerging research directions in terahertz photonics. The article consists of 20 sections, each written by an expert in the field and addressing a specific subject on a few pages.

Following the success and relevance of the 2017 roadmap, this 2023 roadmap edition takes yet another timely look at newly relevant and highly active areas in terahertz photonics research. A diverse group of experts was selected for this article, representing both the breadth of new research areas and the desire to incorporate different voices and viewpoints. Despite its two-page limit for each subject, the most relevant and key aspects of each field are briefly described, which enables the roadmap as a whole to give its readers an initial overview of and outlook into a wide variety of topics and fields in a condensed format. Correspondingly, the roadmap pursues the goal of giving each reader a reference frame of relevant and current topics in modern terahertz photonics research.
